Terry Fox Run, cancer research helps Limoges resident

Forêt LaroseWhen Village Limoges organized their first Terry Fox Run, local resident Katie Davidson was quick to reach out so that she could share her story. Davidson, still 33 years young, was diagnosed with stage II cancer when she was just 26 years old.

After being in remission for four years, the cancer returned and spread across her body. She has been on a clinical trial since her recurrence and her oncology team is working hard to extend her life. She has a positive outlook on life, but is realistic about there being no cure… yet.

“I wanted to be part of the Terry Fox Run that is so specific,” said Davidson. “I wanted to talk about the research and how 82 percent of all donor dollars goes back into cancer research. It is going to people like me, to saving my life.

“We are all here for a specific reason, it is to move the research forward. I am so lucky to be diagnosed now (because) I have been on a clinical trial. How wicked is it that my life is being extended from a drug that I am on (and) my cancer has remained stable because of it.

“I like to think where research will be in 5 or 10 years from now.”

Local volunteers helped organize the 2017 Terry Fox Run on Sept. 17 at Parc Rodolphe-Latreille. The elementary school then ran their Terry Fox Run on Sept. 25.

“It’s more than just a bald head and not feeling well, it is the whole person that is affected,” said Davidson. “When it’s stage four, it is the rest of my life. This is what it is going to be. I am an exceptionally happy person and I am so lucky, but this is also my reality.”

Davidson said that if you want to help someone with cancer, just do it, don’t ask. “Just show up with lasagna (because) someone will eat it. Don’t overthink it, whatever the help we will take it.”

Of the Terry Fox Run, Davidson underlined, “we are here to help fund that new research, the clinical trials. If you can only pick one organization, this is the one to do. It is going to the research that is saving my life.”
